SLEEPERS ON LINE
Two Years Gaol
<N.Z. Press Association!
AUCKLAND, July 26. A 23-year-old workman, Colin Kereti Reihana, who appeared for sentence today before Mr D. G. Sinclair, S.M., for placing sleepers across a railway line was “not very bright at all,” his counsel said.
Reihana was gaoled for two years, a term cumulative on the sentence he is at present serving. The Court was told last week—when Reihana had pleaded guilty—that Reihana while working on the Waikune Prison farm, had put sleepers across the railway tracks in the hope that a train would come off the line. The sleepers were discovered by a goods-train driver. Counsel, Mr A. J. Nixon, said that Reihana would not have an adult appreciation of the possible consequences of his action.
The Magistrate: This was a dreadful thing to do. It could easily have resulted in disaster.
