Record Run By Crisp
(N.Z. Press Association! MELBOURNE. The brilliant steeplechaser, Crisp, "burled” the opposition with a record victory in the $12,700 A. V. Hiskens Steeplechase at Moonee Valley on Saturday. Crisp led from start to finish and slashed 11 3-10 seconds off the course record for two miles and a half.
Crisp ran right away in the final stages to win easing down by 12 lengths from Mission, ridden by the former New Zealander, M. Laurence, with Affreux third.
Some idea of the merit of Crisp s victory can be gained from the fact that the New Zealand-bred Black Butt, winner of the Grand National—in which Crisp did not run—"folded” under pressure half a mile out when running third, and finished last.
The race ended in tragedy for two starters. The former top jumper, Lots of Time, was destroyed after falling, and The Fox broke a leg and was destroyed afterbeing pulled up.
