Demonstrations
Sir,—The anti-war (proViet Cong) demonstration in the city last Friday night, described as being a thou sand strong and peaceful, was In fact no More than some 500 and only peaceful so long as the demonstrators got their way. Several cars, the occupants o which quite rightly resented Communist leaflets being pushed through their windows, were damaged through blows from sticks and heavy boots. It is to be hoped that in al! such cases the owners will bill the City Council for expenses, so that future demonstrations are restricted to Hagley Park and not permitted to interfere with the rights of citizens. It is said that people get the government they deserve. If some 5000 students allow their university to be run by hoodlums, they have only themselves to blame if restrictions are imposed. It is time that these foul-mouthed, ill-mannered louts were brought to heel. Stern action by civic authorities would settle the matter in minutes. —Yours, etc., THE WALRUS. July 18, 1970.
