ACCIDENT RECORD
N.Z. Aero Club Congratulated (N Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. July 15. The Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) had congratulated the Royal New Zealand Aero Club on its low accident record for the last year. The club’s president (Mr G. J. Williamson) said at the club's annual general meeting today.
Of 22 aircraft accidents up to March, 1970.12 were classified as training flights and five involved instructors. Two of these were the result of the failure of aircraft components.
“One club had four accidents and another three, while more than half the clubs were not involved in any accidents,” he said in his annual report. The Director of Civil Aviation (Mr L. F. P. Taylor) said amendments would be introduced by his division to improve aviation safety by raising the standards of private pilot’s licences.
His division was particularly concerned with the standard of pilots flying crosscountry flights. The instru-ment-rating standard could be higher.
“As aircraft become more sophisticated so the standards of pilots flying them have to be raised,” he said.
