Creditable Performance By Music Students
Yesterday afternoon students of the University School of Music gave a recital in the University Hall. The programme began with Brian Shillito and Susan Glasgow playing a Sonatina for Viola and Piano by Gordon Jacob, a work in two movements, beginning in gently reflective fashion and passing, in the second movement into a jolly mood, fresh and resolent of the open air. Both players brought out the nimble liveliness of the second movement and gave it shapely interest. Gregor Brown and Susan Glasgow then played Five Pieces for cello and piano by Couperin. These were recently heard on another programme and again both players showed excellent control of their instruments and produced most pleasing tone, expression, and rhythmic life. I
Janet Pierard and Jennifer Colley played “Trauermusik” by Hindemith, a set of pieces for viola and piano written in memory of His Majesty King George V. There were four short movements written with a deeply moving atmosphere of grief, which both players brought out most convincingly. Miss Pierard produces tone of attractively free quality and she plays well in tune. The recital ended with Anthony Ferner and Susan Glasgow playing a Ballade for Flute and Piano by Frank Martin, an atmospheric work which began quietly and worked up to a fierce climax. Both players were in accord in their interpretation and played with sharpened understanding and with brilliant tone and drive —C.F.B.
