Eventide Scheme
About six acres of land in Sparks Road, Hoon Hay, has been bought by the Christchurch Presbyterian Social Service Association for $15,000 for a third eventide scheme to be developed as required in five to 10 years. The superintendent of the association (the Rev. G. F. McKenzie) said yesterday that until development began ini about five years, the land I would be leased for grazing. In a newsletter issued by the association. Mr McKenzie says that the care of the ageing presents one of the most pressing needs today. This has been caused mainly because of the increase in longevity and the consequent high proportion of elderly persons, particularly those of single status. During the last year or two the association has been greatly frustrated by its inability to meet the need, but with the readier availability of Government subsidy it is busy planning various extensions, he says.
