Charitable Bequests More Than $32,000

Bequests of more than $32,700 to charity are made in the will of Jessie May Jones, a widow, who died this month. Twenty-eight church, welfare, sporting and band organisations benefit under the will. Mrs Jones made private bequests of more than $115,000 and directed that the residue of her estate be divided into five equal parts. One of these parts is to be divided equally between the Salvation Army, Christchurch Presbyterian Social Service Association, Methodist General Purposes Trust Board and Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council. This money is to be used for homes for the elderly in Christchurch.The main charitable beneficiary in the will is the Christchurch Presbyterian Social Service Association. The sum -of $2OOO has also been left to the association for general purposes and another $2OOO for the Woodchester Eventide Home and Hospital.

Mi;s Jones has left $2OO each to the Salvation Army for its homes in Christchurch, to the Methodist General Purposes Trust Board for Wesley Lodge in Park Terrace, Christchurch, and at Picton, and to the Aged People’s Welfare Council. Bequests of $2OOO have also been made to the Canterbury and West Coast Centre of the St John Ambulance Association, Christehurch branch of the New Zealand Foundation for the Blind, Social Services Council of the Diocese of Christchurch for Churchill Courts (a home for the aged), North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canterbury and Westland Division of the Cancer Society of New Zealand. Sums of $lOOO have been left to the Nurse Maude District Nursing Association, Christchurch branch of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing, Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home at Governor’s Bay,

Lepers Trust Board, Heritage, Y.M.C.A., and Y.W.C.A. Mrs Jones gave $6OO to the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church in Christchurch. A bequest of $5OO has been made to the Presbyterian Church Property Trustees to assist ministry students recommended by the Christchurch Presbytery. Bequests of $4OO have been made to the Sumner, Taylor’s Mistake, and New Brighton Surf Life Saving Clubs and the Sumner Life Boat Institution.

Bequests of $2OO have been made to the Salvation Army Citadel Band, Caledonian Society Pipe Band, St Andrews College Pipe Band, Skellerup Woolston Brass Band and Royal Christchurch Musical Society.
