Sir, —The Rev. P. D. Ramsay’s article reminds me of the question put by a young school champion 20 years ago to a staff member in a secondary department. “Why are the lads lectured about alcohol? None of us drink. Many smoke, and that is no good for anyone, and very bad for athletes.” The staff, men and women, smoked; the staff room reeked. No staffmember ever had an alco-! holic odour on the breath. The school like many, others, burnt rubbish in oil drums: and filled adjacent rooms [ with smoke and fumes.
