Future Of Power Board Peninsula Properties

A proposal from the Akaroa County Town Committee that the board should make available its acre and threequarters plantation reserve at L'Aube Hill, Akaroa, to enable it to form part of a park, led the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board, at its meeting yesterday, to set up a sub-committee to report on the future of its properties on Banks Peninsula.

The town committee suggested that the board might make a gift of the reserve and said that the proposed park would give a splendid view of the town and harbour. Mr W. A. Newton, who represents Akaroa County on the board, said he did not think the board should single out a district to receive a gift. There could be criticism from other counties in the board’s district While the plantation was at the top of the hill, and would give a grand view, the town committee might consider a “swap” with land in the bottom corner of the town reserve that could be of use to the board. To Mr W. H. Faulkner, the chairman (Mr L. F. Chamberlain) said that the request raised a general question. The board had three houses at Little River for which it had little use, and four at Duvauchelle. As the board's work was becoming more centralised, and housing was often in the wrong place, be I would be in favour of selling. Messrs Chamberlain, Newton and the senior executive officers were asked to study the board's needs, and to report back. Sports Leave.—After spending some time in discussing where to draw the line, it was agreed to grant sports leave to staff playing in national or provincial sporting teams, and to consider other applications on their merits.

Lease.—lt was agreed to lease the disused Akaroa power-house at $250 a year

for two years to an Akaroa group that wants to use it for the display and sale of cottage industry products. Cookery. The general manager (Mr S. E. Slatter), referring to a discussion last month on the types of cooker used in school cookery classes, said the Education Board used equipment of a commendably high standard, and of modern manufacture.
