Most Improved Squash Player

N. Rush (University B) was in I ! devastating form against A.M ■ Naughton, top for University A,i| (when they met in the latest M series of the A grade squash It I rackets competition. J The two University teams ;drew seven games each after an I 'excising contest, but the other - matches were . won decisively. < Points after four rounds are: 1 Christchurch B 32. Christchurch : A 23, Old Boys B 21, University I A 20, Christchurch C 17. University B 15, Old Boys A 14, Old 1 Collegians 10, Christ’s College 1 8. 1 The leaders, Christchurch B, I again failed to win maximum 1 points, this time against Christ's College. For College, A. 1 P. S. Robinson won well against 1 a slightly off-colour N. W. > Herd, who refused to let him- ' self be dragged into strength- 1 sapping rallies. ’ J. S. Taylor (Christ's College) i displayed an impressive backhand, both in the air and off ' the ground, and deservedly 1 took a game from L. G. Milne 1 (Christchurch B), while J. E. Mcßride (Christ’s College) was unfortunate not to take the third game from the wily S. C. I Suckling (Christchurch B) after having two game points. > Rush went through the first ’ game against Naughton with- ’ out dropping service, winning ! many points from volleys off ll

Naughton s weak cross-court re-t Murns. The second was a long; .game in which Naughton led i 8-6. but failed to clinch it. t tallowing Rush to dominate the .front court again Rush took six successive! points in the final game before. Naughton steadied his play, only to find Rush varying his| tactics with three fine angled; shots which left him wrongfooted. Rush is probably improving; faster nbw than any other Canterbury player and his progress in the provincial championships in two week’s time will be watched with interest. The match between L. Plever and B. Johns produced a good brand of squash, both players mixing their shots well. Plever hit the ball just sufficiently harder than Johns to give him the edge"in their driving duels, and although Johns is a faster and more determined runner! than Plever, he made errors after reaching some extremly* difficult shots. T. L. Williams was the only; winner for Old Collegians, and; he had to fight back from two games down against R. D. Monk; (Christchurch C), who is fast J regaining form. Monk's volleying was crisp and decisive and this, allied with firm. Ior r wall shots, had Williams scampering for the first three sets.

I Monk led 7-4 in the third ;;game but could not overcome Williams's desperate retrieving. For Christchurch C, A. E. Dun- • lop won well against C. C. (KisSling, and D. Hearn out- ■ Masted the veteran L. G. Holden • over five games. J Results: — >| Christchurch C 8. Old Colli legians 2: R. D. Monk lost'to • T. L. Williams. 10-9,,9-5. 7-9. 0-9, 5-9; A. E.
