No Rail-car For League
Sir,—ln September last year I travelled on a special “Blue Streak” railcar from Palmerston North to Wellington to see the opera “Carmen.” The fare included admission to the opera. These are the same ageing (between 11 and 15 years) railcars as run to the West Coast, except that they have been refurnished and repainted. Has the Railways Department fooled itself with new paint, or was that just a temporary lapse in policy?—Yours, etc., D. R. LUPTON.
July 3, 1970. [The general manager of railways (Mr I. Thomas) replies: “The department’s policy on the chartering of railcars has not changed. At this stage there are no plans to provide new rail-cars or rail-car engines other than the three new twin-coach cars for the Blue Streak run. The railcars operating between Wellington and Auckland can be used on occasional shortdistance prestige runs around these two terminals which will not appreciably affect their remaining life, but the mileage run by the remaining cars makes it essential to decline requests for special runs, in order that these railcars can be kept in service on regular runs as long as Ipossible.”]
