North Otago Beaten In Badminton
The Canterbury division 111 representative badminton team retanied its unbeaten record this season with a convincing 15-1 win over a depleted North Otago team at Skellerup Hall on Saturday mroning.
Although Canterbury appeared to win easily, North Otago managed to make close contests of a number of matches, being unlucky not to win at least one other in the women’s section.
North Otago was below its full strength, with its leading men of last season, S. Johnston and O. Turnbull, being absent. D. B. Reid, the Canterbury captain, and E. Wallace renewed their competitive acquaintance of many years standing in the top men’s singles match. They had been opponents in division I contests several years ago and exhibited this wealth of experience once again, before Reid emerged the winner, 15-12, 15-10.
The fourth North Otago men’s singles player, G. Fletcher, took the erratic T. Sintes to three sets with a display which was remarkable for the number of seemingly decisive shots returned.
Miss E. Johnston gained North Otago’s only win when she deservedly beat Mrs N. Johnston, 11-5, 11-9. Its stop woman, Mrs E. Turnbull, was somewhat unlucky in losing to Canterbury's Mrs S. Fox, 5-11, 11-6, 5-11.
The improved combination between Reid and Sintes in their doubles match was encouraging for Canterbury. They lost their previous doubles match against South Canterbury earlier this season, but this time beat C. Hendrie and P. Young, 18-15. 15-4.
