This wild pig was. shot on the hills above Mount Pleasant on Saturday. Mr J. S. Scott, a Heathcote farmer, had been told by rabbiters of the Plains Pest Destruction Board that they had seen pig; roofings in the Mount) Pleasant area. When Mr Scott went to feed out hay to his cattle on Saturday, he was amazed, even after the rabbiters’ report, to see a large, almost black wild pig among the cattle. I
He telephoned Mr F. S. Cunningham, an enthusiastic hunter. He and his father, Mr A. F. S. Cunningham, joined Mr Scott and drove in his utility vehicle close to where the pig was. The cattle took no notice of the vehicle, because they are used to it. and the pig did not mind until Mr Cunningham got out with his rille. The pig then ran uphill, with Mr Cunningham in pursuit for about 100 yards before he dropped it with one shot, It was about
i-i half a mile below the c Summit Road. s The animal was a 2401 b, i- three-year-old sow, “a real t Captain Cooker,” Mr y Cunningham, sen., said, e There had been no wild k pigs on the Port Hills for i, more than 50 years, so it o'- was anyone’s guess how! t i the pig came to be there. The photograph, taken yesfi terday, shows Mr Cunningham, sen., with the i pig. His son was away hunting pigs in their s more normal surroundi ings of the North Cantert| bury back country.
