Waitara Men May Be Dismissed
(New Zealand Press Association)
NEW PLYMOUTH, June 12.
About half the men employed at the Waitara works of Thomas Borthwick and Sons (A’Asia), Ltd, could be dismissed if they do not return to work on Monday, it was made known this evening by the works district manager (Mr I. Smith).
The entire beef department of the works was brought to a standstill at midday on Thursday when a section of the beef department walked off the job in protest at the dismissal of two boners.
This caused the stoppage of all beef killing and meant that more than 300 men were idle.
No cattle were killed at the works again today. Mr Smith said this situation would con-
tinue until Monday morning when work would be offered to all the men involved in the dispute.. “We will be offering stock for killing on Monday, but if the situation does not return to normal, we will have no option but to bring the matter to head and pay the men off,” he said.
If this step is taken, it will be one of the most drastic measures ever taken at the works.
