STOP-WORK MEETINGS
Retreaders Seek More
[ Wage rates and possible paction to join the Rubber (Workers’ Union will be discusset) by a stop-work meeting of Christchurch tyre-retread-: ing workers in the Canter-: {bury Trades Hall at 10 a.m. on Monday. Retreaders have belonged to the Engineers’ Union since that union took over vulcanisers about 20 years ago, but retreaders have expressed dissatisfaction with this arrangement, and have decided—after unsuccessfully applying to form their own union—to try to join the Rubber Workers’ Union. A spokesman for the retreaders (Mr R. W. Riddell) said yesterday that the Rubber Workers’ Union had been stopped from taking over the tyre retreaders by the Engineers’ Union’s refusal to release them.
A meeting held four weeks ago with the Minister of Labour and the president and secretary of the Christchurch Rubber Workers’ Union had so far produced no results, he said. At present rubber workers making tyres received twice as much pay as retreaders, Mr Riddell said.
