EXPORTS OF CATTLE
Concern Of Breeders Breeders of pedigree Jersey cattle are concerned at the class of beast being exported, principally to Australia. It was stated at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Breeders' Association in Christchurch yesterday that overseas buyers were operating within lower price limits, and as . a result the best quality young cattle were, not being obtained. One breeder said that after being approached by an agent about selling some heifers for export, be placed 20 heifers in two groups. Seven of the nine heifers in the lower group were selected by the agent, but none in the top group. On the motion of a northern delegate, Mr L. Williams, the conference decided that where cattle were being selected by Australians, they should be "highly commended," rating, but that where cattle were being selected by someone acting for Australian buyers, they should be of “v.h.c.” rating.
