OPERATIC SOCIETY
Loss On The Year
“The spectacle of song, dance and drama, as con- ] tained in productions mounted by the Christchurch ] Operatic Society, is still a i public drawcard in spite of the counter attractions of television and later hotel closing times,” the society’s chairman (Mr C. H.- Yeatiinan) says in his report to : be presented to the annual •meeting next week. However, it is essential to I produce the right show at the i right time if maximum boxoffice returns are to be obtained and if the operatic society is to be maintained as a major cultural force in the life of Christchurch, Mr Yeatman says. He says that the Dobbs Franks’s production of “The Pajama Game” was “pulsating with vitality and exuberance” but nevertheless suffered a loss of SBO5. This loss has since been reduced by 5433 received from New Plymouth for hire of the sets, and further hiring may turn the loss into an eventual profit. I Mr Yeatman says that the society has suffered a loss for the second year in succession, the current deficit amounting to SlOO5. But through the selection of “The Sound of Music”—a proven money-spinner whenever it has been played in New Zealand—as the society's major production for 1970, next | year’s financial statement would show a substantial profit
