Man Stabbed In Brawl

A brawl in a Lyttelton bar last night flowed on to the street and ended only after police reinforcements, including two dogs, had arrived from Christchurch.

In the fighting one man was stabbed, a constable suffered a cut 1 above an eye and all in- ] volved were bruised. The fight began in the lower bar of the British Hotel soon after 10 p.m. Four Lyttelton police went to the scene and when they arrived at least 20 persons were fighting on the street and in the bar. As the police moved in Constable K. R. McLeod was hit above the eye. Someone in the crowd called, “It’s on boys” and the police were attacked. Reinforcements were called for from Christchurch and quiet was restored when they arrived. A man who had been hand- : cuffed and placed in a police car was found to be missing when it was all over. The police are seeking this man, who took the handcuffs with him.

Constable McLeod was taken to the Christchurch Hospital for treatment.
