Hagley Sports Centre

Sir, —I would appreciate an explanation as to how a commercial venture, Hagley Sports Centre and Golf Driving Range (complete with sealed access road, car park, and “fowl run” type of enclosing fence) was established in South Hagley Park. —Yours, etc., J. G. GOURIE. May 5, 1970.

[The Town Clerk (Mr M. B. Hayes) replies: “The council permitted the Canterbury Cricket Association to establish the sports centre and golf driving range in South Hagley Park. A rental is received for use of the site and a substantial

part of the income received from use of the facilities, which have proved to be distinct asset to the city, is available to the association for advancing cricket interests in the district.”]
