Papanui Road Traffic

Sir, —On behalf of the residents and the business community on both sides of Papanui Road, may I inquire of the Transport Department why it allows double-decker, articulated trucks towing double-decker trailers to use Papanui Road? These trucks, transporting sheep and cattle from the north, continually pollute the roading and the atmosphere, especially when held up by traffic in Papanui and St Albans and when waiting for traffic lights. If they are delivering to the abattoirs or the saleyards, why are they not directed via Johns and Russley Roads and

down Blenheim Road? Further, large articulated trucks carrying heavy and perhaps dangerous loads of logs also create a terrific din from their diesel engine and power breaks through to their trailers. It would indeed be a great relief if these operators were instructed to use Johns and Russley Roads both coming and going.—Yours, POLLUTED PAPANUI. May 15, 1970. [The City Engineer (Mr P, G. Scoular) replies: “The prohibition of heavy trade vehicles from using Papanui Road would require bylaw control, and the matter will be referred to the City Council for consideration.”]
