Woman In The Chair

(From Out Own Reporter) TIMARU, June 2 Civic history was made at Temuka when a woman sat for the first time in the mayoral chair at a meeting of the Temuka Borough Council. The Mayor (Mr C. J. L. Pye) is on holiday in Australia, and his deputy, Cr (Miss) E. A. Thompson, was chairman at the estimates meeting of the council. Congratulating Miss Thompson, Cr E. H. Turner referred to the meeting as a "sensation for Temuka.” The strangeness of the situation for councillors was shown by the variation in titles addressed to Miss Thompson. She was, variously, “Madam Chairwoman” "Madam President” "Madam Mayor” and, merely “Councillor.”
