ADDINGTON MARKET Most Prime Lambs Easier; Good Sale For Ewes

Prime cattle had a firm sale at the Addington Market yesterday but prime lambs and store lambs were easier.

Prime ewes again had the best sale in the prime sheep section, but apart from the best quality lots, values for two-tooth wethers and two-tooth ewes were unchanged on recent lower rates.

Prime lambs had an easier sale. Butchers’ lambs were in over-supply and these showed the main decline. Prime cattle sold well after opening on an easier note, and there was another good sale for a small entry of dairy cattle.

Store Sheep W(tt> an entry of ISM lambs and MO breeding ewes, the store sheep section was back to a mid-winter entry. A very small gallery followed the sale and values for lambs were again easier. Bomneys made up the bulk at the entry, the best of them selling from $5.70 to 36 20. medium from W to 35.30, and smaller from 04.20 to 04.75. Flne-woolled wether lambs had a hard sale and odd pens were passed. Very few fetched 05 or more. Included tn the ewe lamb entry was a pen of well-grown Corriedales at >7.10 and some woolly Romneys at >5.40. A pen of mixed-aged Bomneys from Banks Peninsula topped the breeding ewe section at >7.10, and there were other sales of older Bomney ewes at 05.70 to 06.25. Sales of store lambs included:—

Eva Price Partnership (Birdling’s Flat), 100 Romney wethers at $5.70 to >6.20. 100 Bomney eves at >5.40; K. A. Adams I (Cheviot), 74 Corriedale owes at >7.20: D. Costello (Cheviot). 105 shorn Corriedale wethers at >4.75. Prime Lambs Prime lambs were again tn largo supply, the yarding being 2270 compared with 2865 last week. A good selection of butchers' lambs was included, but following the trend of recent sales, the market was not a strong one. Competition for this class of lamb was confined mainly to the retail trade and with a weaker demand, values eased 30c to 50e a head. Medium and light-weight

lambs also had an sailor sals. Freezing buyers continued to show some interest, although not as much as last week, and apart from a few odd pens, values eased 30c. Some of this was probably a redaction of the easier lamb schedule. Values were:— Extra heavy lamba, 07.65 to >8.30, with odd ealee to >B.OO. Prime heavy, >7.20 to >7.00. Primo medium, >6.40 to >7. Lighter lambs, >5.60 to >6.10. Loading salos of prime lambs included:— Ward Brothers (Ashburton), 70 at >8.15 to >8.40: D. M. Stephenson and Company (To Pirita). 83 at >7.30 to >7.80; K. F. Drummond (Oxford), 27 at >7.80 to 38.20; C. A. R. Woods (Springeton), 10 at >7.20.

Prime Sheep

Adult ewes were again the strong point of the prime sheep sale. Values were firm on recent sales. The market for young wethers and two-tooth owes showed little change. There was reasonable interest in the bestquality lots, but the market for the average young sheep was rather depressed. The weaker demand here appeared to bo a reflection of the big lamb Mie earlier in the day, and the market is unlikely to improve until lamb yardings taper off. Older wethers were also easier. The fat sheep yarding was 2200, compared with 1878 last week. Values were;— Best young wethers, 33 to 88.85. Medium wethers. 37 to 37.85. Best old wethers, 18.80 to 86.00. Prime Cattle Entries In the prime cartie section tell from 836 to 288. It was barely sufficient for the retail trade.

Steers made up the bulk of the entry, cows and heifers being in very small supply. Resecting the smaller yarding, the eale was a very good one tor vendore, valuer for steers and heifers being fully firm to a shade stronger. There were sales of large steers at more than >2OO, and heifers at more than >l4O. Reflecting the easier freezing schedule, cows were up to >5 easier, except for the best butchers’ cows. Prime heavy steer beef sold to 323 per lOOlbs, prime mediumweight at 324 to 325; prime heavy heifer beef to >22.50, prime medium-weight at >23 to $24.50; and cow beef from >l9 to >2l.
