DRINKING BAN IMPOSED
“Coach Irvine advises anyone at the hotel at 7.30 on Friday nights to stop there, as he does not want to disturb theii drinking after that hour.” This instruction was issued by the former Canterbury and New Zealand Rugby league scrum-half, R. S. J. Irvine, and reproduced in the “Walgett Spectator” recently. Irvine joined Walgett (Northern New South Wales) as player-coach earlier this year. Newspaper reports of Walgett’s matches this season have consistently praised Irvine’s performances, particularly his tackling, line kicking and ability to create opportunities for his threequarters. Commenting on Walgett’s 18-15 defeat of Cobar, the writer said: “Irvine had his best game so far and scored an individual try alongside the posts after a crashing run. He inspired his team when down 7-15 to really turn on good football and should have received a lot of supporters for his efforts.” Irvine’s presence also appears to have made quite an impression on the Walgett players. The “Walgett Spectator” said that the centre, G. Thorne, was' overheard making the comment that “if anyone in Walgett tells me this guy can't play football,- I’ll punch his head in," during the game against Bourke.
