Students
Sir,—ln answer to “University Graduate,” I should explain that in referring to examinations continuing over an eight-to-ten-year period I was including the last three years of secondary school for academic pupils, and also was allowing for the cases of those students of law, medicine!, veterinary science and postgraduate research, and those doing double degrees, whose university studies may cover six or seven years. 1 am, of course, aware that the majority of students graduate in three years.— Yours, etc.', SYBIL WOODS. Timaru, May 31. 1970.
Sir,—lt seems obvious that people who use the emotive term, “undisciplined lout," in reference to student protesters are afraid of protest. And why? Because they refuse to haye an objective look at wnat the protest really is about South Africa and Vietnam are surely two of the greatest issues of the day. Good luck to these young ones. They are our future. Leave them alone, or better still, you are on the older Side of the "generation gap’’ consider joining them in their protest sometimes. You’ll find it a most rewarding experience. You’ll never tick them, so why not join them?—Yours, etc., FRANCES MILLER. June 1, 1970.
Sir, —I am one of the taxpayers who agree with Messrs Gair and Guthrey that students attending our universities are privileged. The number of students attending our universities from overseas proves this fact. Nevertheless the majority of students still have my best wishes. On the other hand, the dirty, unkempt, Communist-inspired agitators, who obviously are not working for exams or anything else otherwise they would not have the time for organising demonstrations, protests, etc.—should be thrown out and sent to work where their time would be better spent. This is not a singular opinion but the opinion of the average man who pays the taxes to enable the Government to extend these privileges.—Yours, etc., SICK OF IT ALL. June 2, 1970.
