A total of 116 entries from throughout New Zealand have been received for the Schools Chamber Music Contest, sponsored for the fifth successive year by the Bank of New South Wales. All main centres are well represented and 21 groups representing 17 Christchurch schools will participate in the district contests to be held on June 26 and 27 at the University Hall, Worcester Street
The judge will be Mr G. Adams of Auckland University’s Music Department The district contests conclude in Auckland on June 27.
Up to ten groups will be selected for the national final, which will be held in Wellington on Sunday, August 2. The judges there will be the members of the world-famous Czech Quartet now resident at the University of Canterbury. The winning school will receive a grant of $4O to further develop chamber music activities among its pupils. The associated programme design contest has attracted a record number of 225 entries. The winner will receive a prize of $2O and attend the chamber music finals in Wellington, and his school will receive a grant of $4O. Judges will be Mr P. Olds, a Wellington artist; Mrs K. Coolahan, tutor at Wellington Polytechnic School of Design; Mr W. Barret of the Department of Education; and Mr W. G. Boorman, public relations manager of the Wales.
