Two members of the New Zealand team which will contest the world chess championships at Feigen, West Germany, during August-Septem-ber, will play in the Rothmans South Island titles at the Teachers’ Training College this week-end. They are B. Anderson (Christchurch), who, at 22, is already a former national champion and a New Zealand master of two years standing, and G. Kerr (Dunedin). With Mr A. S. Hollander, the captain-manager of the -world championship team, who is also president of the New Zealand Chess Association, and the 21-year-old sixth ranked player, G. About 50 players are expected to enter the three grades—championship, A and B—and they will complete 20 or more hours of play by the end of the third day on Monday evening. Games will be played over four hours, with a time control of 40 moves required from each player within two hours. Amongst the youngest players in the tournament will be lA. Carpinter, the Canterbury schoolboys’ champion, and G. Leishman (Otago): both are in the B grade. Carpinter will be a challenger for the New Zealand schoolboys’ title in August
