PROTEST IN AUSTRALIA
South African Team Arrives (N.Z Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, May 27. South Africa’s all-white women’s netball team arrived in Melbourne today to find themselves at the centre of a growing storm over Australia's involvement with South Africa in sport. They were greeted at Melbourne Airport by five student leaders from the National Union of Australian University Students’ conference now being held in Melbourne. The five students marched on to the tarmac carrying placards saying: “Black is Beautiful” and “South African Races not wanted in Aus tralia.”
An Opposition Labour M.P.. Mr Gordon Bryant, had earlier condemned the organisers of the South African women’s tour.
Mr Gregor Macauley, president of the N.U.A.U.S., said that South African sporting teams should be barred from Australia.
The team’s manager, Mrs Rita Oosthuison, commented: “I’m certain our tour won’t be cancelled. We’ve come here to play sport.” Asked whether she thought more South African sportsmen should put pressure on their Government to ease the apartheid clause. Mrs Oosthuison said: “I won’t comment on that”
