Mississippi Oil Slick

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW ORLEANS, May 26. Giant patches of crude oil fouled the Mississippi River from New Orleans half-way to the Gulf of Mexico today after a barge had collided with a tugboat and dumped about 67,000 gallons of oil into the river. “The oil is dissipating as it stretches out, but we’ve sighted some big patches halfway down the river,” a United States Coast Guard spokesman said. The crude oil poured out of a gash in the barge, which was beached on the river bank after the mishap. The oil threatens water supplies to the communities along the river, and the Coast Guard has asked city officials to change to emergency supplies.
