Bill To Cut U.S. Dairy Imports
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) j WASHINGTON, May 22. An influential Congressman has introduced a bill to cut United States dairy imports, which come mainly from Australia, New Zealand, and the European Common Market. Mr John Byrnes, senior Republican member on the House ways and means committee, said his measure was aimed at classifying imports with higher milk-solid or butterfat content so that they fall within quotas, and can be cut back. Imports affected would be mainly about 7m lb of Monterey cheese imported from New Zealand annually, icecream mix, chocolate crumb of 5.5 per cent or less fatcontent, animal feeds containing milk or milk derivatives, and cheeses containing .5 per cent of less butterfat by weight.
