New Private Hospital
The St John of God Hospital, a new 25-bed private hospital for men and women at Halswell, will be blessed by the Roman Catholic Bishop of Christchurch (the Most Rev. B. P. Ashby) and opened by Dr J. A. Boyd, from the Department of Health, Wellington, on Friday afternoon. Also present will be representatives from the North Canterbury Hospital Board and from some other hospitals in Christchurch.
The hospital, which will be run by the St John of God Brothers, is situated on the ground floor of the former Mount Magdala home which was taken over by the brothers at the end of 1967 from the Sisters of the Good Shepherd Order. Renovations to the building to enable it to be used as a hospital have cost about $85,000. The hospital staff will consist of two brothers and several registered nurses.
