TIMBER SALE POLICY
The attitude of the Selwyn Plantation Board to the processing of timber from its stands was explained in a letter from the board’s superintendent-secretary (Mr E. A. Cooney), received at a meeting of the Waimairi County Council on Thursday evening.
The board’s act empowered it to process timber, he said, and from time to time the board had considered extending its activities to processing. The board, however, had always confined its policy to seiling standing trees. “In the past, the Forest Service policy of selling its timber standing at stumpages which we consider well below market value has resulted In the board restricting the sale of timber to the absolute minimum required to bring in sufficient income for normal expenditure,” Mr Cooney said.
“This reasoning is in the hope that , some day the Forest Service will either not have sufficient supplies to meet demand, or will change its policy of selling timber. This is just what is likely to happen within the next two years.”
Cr W. R. Holmes said the council had a substantial interest in the board’s assets. On his motion, it was agreed to have discussions with the board.
