PESTICIDE SAFETY

(N.Z Press Association)

WELLINGTON, May 21.

The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Carter) is unable to give an instruction that no pesticide can be used unless the Agricultural Chemicals Board guarantees that it is safe for fauna and humans. This was said today in Parliament by the Minister of Defence (Mr Thomson), who was replying on behalf of Mr Carter to a question which referred to the deaths of birds on farms using D.D.T. Substitutes.

“Each pesticide is considered on its merits by the Agricultural Chemicals Board before a decision is made on whether its use is to be approved and, where appropriate, directions for use are prescribed,” he said. “It is recognised that, if incorrectly used, some pesticides may harm man and

other forms of animal life and this factor is given full consideration by the board.”
