THEATRE BOUGHT
New Use As
Factory
Skellerup Industries, Ltd, has bought the Lido Theatre in New Brighton and next year will open a factory in the building and perhaps a retail shop on the ground floor.
Mr V. R. Skellerup, managing director of Skellerup Industries, said last evening that a floor would be built to make the building into two storeys. The theatre was bought from New Brighton Holdings, Ltd. The lessee for the last six years, Mr H. L. Masters, said that his lease would run out in January next year and he had no right of renewal. The Lido Theatre, formerly known as the Roxy, was started by two New Brighton business men, Mr E. Lever, a tailor, and Mr J. A. Shaw, a butcher, 50 years ago. Mr Masters said that he was considering starting an “intimate theatre” on the second storey of a building in New Brighton. This type of theatre had proved very successful in the United States.
