Five Books Classified As Indecent
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 20. Five books, all paperbacks, were classified as indecent by the Indecent Publications Tribunal yesterday. Four of them were published by the Softcover Library, London. They were: “Liz," by Frank Kane; "Community of Women," by Sheldon Lord. "The Overnighters," by Brian Black; and "Many Men for Rosetta.” by Karol Thomas. “Sex Manners for Advanced Lovers,” by Robert Charthan, published by the New English Library, London, was classified as indecent. In its decision the tribunal said that the treatment and style of this book were not consonant with
its purported scientific pur-1 pose. The tribunal said that 14 “second-rate paperbacks,” all issued by the Softcover Library, relied on sex, perversion, crime or violence as themes. In the first four these themes were handled in a realistic fashion, with some pretence of plot, setting and credible motivation. The books which the tribunal classified as not indecent were: "The Sex Framer," by Stacey Clubb: “The Colour of Love,” by Kevin McLeod: "The Girl Must be Loved,” by G. G. Fickling: and “His Private Pleasure,” by Joijeph Hilton Smyth. The tribunal said that in the next six paperbacks there was no story but only a repetition of incidents, and no character but merely perpetrators of perverted, violent or criminal acts. To make such obsession appear admirable or even normal could do harm to persons of limited experience, it said. The tribunal classified as indecent in the hands of persons under 18: "The Murky Underground,” by Sylvia Sharon; "The Man who Played with Dolls," by Paul Clay: “Nurses Wild." by Florence Stonebreaker, “Chris," by Randy Salen. "The Exhibitionists," by Lillian Preston; and “One Hot Winter,” by Dixie Chappell.
