SETTLING DOWN
Players In New Roles
The players who will appear in different positions in the final All Black trials tomorrow showed no lack of familiarity with the new roles at training yesterday. W. D. Cottrell, at first fiveeights, developed an admirable rhythm in his catching and passing: J. F. Burns soon got to grips with his job as loose head prop; and B. D. M. Furlong, who will play at fullback in the main trial, opposing W. F. McCormick, kicked for goal with accuracy, although his range was limited.
There was some surprise in the trials at Palmerston North when Furlong was given a kick at goal, but it is understood that his captain, B. J. Lochore, was instructed along these lines by the selectors. Furlong was a distinct success at first five-eights in the North Island trials, and his appearance at full-back tomorrow is an indication that he is being considered for a utility role on tour. However, even if G. F. Kernber receives a favourable medical report tomorrow and is chosen on trust, it is still likely that Furlong will win a place in the side as a specialist five-eighths.
