DISCUSSION SOON
School Term
Changes
An earlier starting date for schools, changes in the length of school holidays and the coordination of secondaryschool policy on school leavers may result from a meeting to be held in Wellington on June 9 by principals of New Zealand secondary schools. At a meeting last evening of the Shirley Boys’ High School Board of Governors a statement from the New Zealand Secondary School Boards’ Association was read outlining such proposals, including the synchronisation of external examinations. Earlier school closing and related subjects are also being considered nationally by the Department of Education, the Post Primary Teachers’ Association and the Educational Institute. At a national conference last year of 140 State secondary school principals it was agreed that the school year should be so arranged that it finished as close to December 1 as possible. To bring in such a plan would mean the synchronisation of external examinations and a co-ordinated policy for the closing of all State and independent secondary schools.
A recent meeting in Christchurch of the southern region of the Secondary School Boards’ Association also supported moves for an earlier closing date for the school year.
