FINE CUPS RECORD

(N.2 P. 4 Correspondent) SYDNEY. Tavel’s exciting victory in the $25,000 Centenary Adelaide Cup (2m) last week gave the Adelaide trainer, J. B. Cummings, his sixteenth major cup in less than five years. The 16 wins, which began with Light Fingers in the Melbourne Cup of 1965, have, without exception, been achieved with horses raised in New ZealandAnd this tremendous success in major staying races explains why he returns to Trentham year aftdr year. Tavel, the latest star in Cummings’s stable, is a three-year-old bay gelding by Alcimedes out of Kadelka. Tavel was the last yearling sold at the 1968

National Sales at Trentham and, because his dam was not eligible for the Stud Book, realised only $3500. Cummings has turned Tavel out for a well-earned spell and will bring him back to be trained for the spring cups. The highly talented young stayer is accompanied in the spelling padclocks by Gay Poss (Le Filou-Sweet Time). The recent A.J.C. Oaks and South Australian St Leger winner which appeals aS another Light Fingers. Cummings’s 16 cup wins have been recorded by eight horses, all of them sired by Alcimedes, Agricola, or Le Filou. The big s victories have been:

Melbourne Cup: Light Fingers (1965), Galilee (1966), Red Handed (1967). Caulfield Cup: Galilee (1966), Big Phiiou (1969). Sydney Cup: Galilee (1967), Lowland (1969). Queen’s Cup: Red Handed (1966). Brisbane Cup: Fulmen (1967) Adelaide Cup: Fulmen (1967), Tavel (1970). Adelaide Birthday Cup Galilee (1966), Fulmen (1968). The photograph shows J. B.
