First Win In N.I.

Scientific’s success at Foxton last week-end was an important one for his trainer, B. N. Mundy, formerly from the South Island and now based at Woodville. Mundy came north last summer and Scientific’s victory marked his first win as a public trainer from his new headquarters. Just after the Second World War Mundy began an apprenticeship as a jockey, spending a period at Riccarton with E. Rosewarne, but spending most of his “time” with J. Trowbridge, on the West Coast. Weight disrupted his career but he reappeared as a trainer from Omoto, sharing these activities with running

a butchery business at Greymouth.

Mundy sold out last year and elected to come north at Christmas time, finally settling at Woodville, where he uses the stables previously owned by I. Bradbury. Mundy’s best-known representative in the south was the Dogger Bank colt, Kowhai King, which won three races at Riccarton as a juvenile last term, a feat which took him into open class. Since coming to Woodville, Kowhai King has been joined by Scientific, Abbeylara, Catolica and two yearlings. Kowhai King has not long resumed after a late summer and autumn break and could soon assert himself on the North Island provincial circuit.
