Kaiapoi Councillors Attack Citv
Strong criticism of the Christchurch City Council for not making fast enough progress in bringing the Northern Motorway into the city was heard at the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council on Monday evening.
Cr W. Bell said that Christchurch city did not seem to be concerned and Kaiapoi should be trying to push the motorway from the north to the end. The delay in the motorway generally could be blamed on the city “not pushing its barrow quickly enough." “The money being spent in
the North Island could well be spent in Christchurch. The No. 14 District Roads Council, which includes Kaiapoi, received the lowest allocation,” said Cr R. L. Wylie. “One reason for delay is that the city fathers are not determined enough to upgrade the reading system, allowing themselves to be side-tracked by other organisations, to the benefit of Wellington and Auckland.”
Cr Wylie said that Christchurch organisations were constantly complaining of population drift to the North Island. The fairly rapid development of the transport system in and about Christchurch would help to arrest that drift.
The council referred the matter to the Town Planning and By-laws Committee with a special invitation to Cr Bell.
Presentation Of Medals.— Long service and good conduct medals will be presented to Staff Sergeant R. W. Brown and former Sergeant A. S. J. Jory, at a parade in the King Edward Bararcks this morning.
