AUCKLAND.
The Commonwealth and Olympic Games representative, R. D. Thomson (Auckland), has retired from competitive cycling. “I am definitely finished,” Thomson said yesterday. “1 have had a long, arduous and I ■successful career and my main object now will be to [ ; give my wife, Heather, help in her athletics.” Thomson, who represented New Zealand at Perth, Kingston (Jamaica) and Mexico City, will also help a small number of promising young cyclists. Two of these are K. Cross, a youngster who shows a lot of promise, and the young Wanganui cyclist, R. Cheatley, when he comes to live in Auckland in September. Cheatley will spend two months in Australia before moving to Auckland. Thomson successfully coached his wife to win the Auckland mile and half-mile track titles in 1969. and the New Zealand mile championship in the same year. Mrs Thomson won her silver fern iin the Pacific Conference Games at Tokyo last September.
