New Station For Waikato
<N.Z. Preu Association) HAMILTON, May 14. The Greater Waikato Basin will have a privately-owned radio station within 36 weeks, according to the managing director of the Independent Broadcasting Company (Mr R. B. Waddington). He made the forecast after an announcement by the New Zealand Broadcasting Authority that it had granted a private warrant to the company. Mr Waddington said that the station would broadcast initially from Hamilton, but later repeater stations would be established for the Hauraki Plains and Te Kuiti areas. ~ Under the terms of the Broadcasting Act, the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation has 14 days in which to appeal against the decision. Granting the warrant, the authority imposed formal conditions, and the following stipulation: “That the total shareholding by a news company, as defined in the News Media Ownership Act of 1965, shall not exceed 35 per cent of the authorised capital of the company without the written consent of the authority.”
