Departmental Survey Of Air Pollution

The Department of Health with the co-operation of the Department of Scientific and'industrial Research, wifi make an intensive survey of air pollution in Christchurch this winter.

The survey will fill in gaps 1 in information gathered in a I series of tests by the D.S.I.R. on air pollution in the city 1 between 1959 and 1964. ’ Six monitoring stations 1 with equipment worth more 1 than 96000. will be set up in ] Christchurch to monitor the i path of clouds of polluted air. I Four of the stations will be set up by the Department of l Health and the other two by 1 the D.S.LR. I A main object of the sur- i vey will be to find if polluted air which is blown away from i

the city during the day is blown back again at night. Visible smoke-pollution will be measured by a machine which detects variations in the amount of light passed through a sample of air. More grit and smog means that less light passes through the sample. . Invisible sulphur-dioxide pollution will be measured by passing a sample of air through a process which will dissolve the sulphur, thus taking it out of the air so that it can be measured.'
