Leading Australian Shares Are Firm
Mining shares turned back after a firm start on the Sydney Stock Exchange yesterday. Most issues, including many which showed early gains, closed lower. In Melbourne speculatives behaved in a similar pattern.
Poseidon fell 1300 c to $92, after sales down to $BB. Samin also closed off the bottom at 1100 for a loss of 50c. North Flinders fell 20c to 260.
Trading remained very quiet throughout the market, and the decline was attributed to a general drift rather than pressure to sell. Established issues remained firm, with Mt Isa up 70c at 1440, and Hamersley 10c better at 810.
Metals Exploration was firm at 720, although Great Boulder fell 10c to 440. Peko reacted under selling pressure, losing 30c at 1150. In the oils, Beach ran into profit-taking after its recent sharp advance, losing 12c at 133. Bounty was steady, although the options improved. Leading industrials were generally better with B.H.P. up 30c at 1460. Dunlop and Osti were firm, while Thiess added 10c at 340. SYDNEY Sales.—Amal.
