ADDINGTON MARKET Another Strong Calf Sale

Another buoyant sale prevailed for store calves at the Addington market yesterday. A large gallery followed the sale, and with strong inquiry from Banks Peninsula and Ashburton buyers, the market was for a time about $2 a head stronger than last week’s good sale.

The sale, which was the second held this week exclusively for calves, drew an entry of 2240 head. It included some of the largest calves seen at Addington this season, but otherwise medium to average calves predominated.

The yarding included quite a number of calves from Banks Peninsula and these sold particularly well. One of the feature lines came from the Springvale Estate, of Little River, and another was a line of 160 Herefords from the Lakes Station, of Hawarden. These were a very even line of wellmarked steer calves, and they averaged $67. Some of the strongest buying interest was shown in a sprinkling of Shorthorn-Hereford cross steers. With sales to $B7, they sold at premium rates. A range of values is:— Steer calves: Best Angus and Angus-Hereford cross, $75 to $BO, with odd sales to >9l; good average, $6B to $74; medium, s6ft to $66; small, $52 to $57, with tail-enders down to >4O. Best Herefords, >7O to >77; good average, $65 to $69; medium $5B to >64, and small down to >5O.

When the sale opened, it appeared that values were about to make their first down-turn for the season, for the first 30 pens of calves were $2 to $3 back on recent rates. However, the market showed a noticeable lift once it reached a number of pens of large autumn-born calves. The high prices paid seemed to rub on to the rest of the offering, for the market not only recovered the decline shown in the early stages, but firmed by about $2 on last week’s rates. Values showed some easing when the market moved to the smaller lots, and, with some exceptions, tail-end lots of both steers and heifers were weaker than they have been.

Heifers: Best Angus and Angus-Hereford cross, >6O to >65, with one sale at >70.50; average, >54 to *5B, with small to medium, >45 to >52, and tailenders down to >34. Average Herefords. >55 to >62; others, >47 to >53.
