Obituary MR H. E. SOLOMON

A master at Christ’s College for 40 years, Mr Harry Earle Solomon, died in Christchurch on Sunday. Mr Solomon was born in Sydney, and served with the Australian forces in France during the First World War, coming to New Zealand in 1919 and joining the staff of Christ’s College in 1920. Mr Solomon was appointed house tutor of Flowers House, and he held this position until 1944, when he was appointed house-master. For many years he coached both cricket and football, and he himself played both golf and tennis. From 1921 to 1937 he trained the artillery section of the school’s cadet corps, and for many years he judged school boxing contests. Mr Solomon concentrated on teaching geography and mathematics, and in 1930 he was appointed senior mastei for geography. In the same year he took charge of the school's book exchange, and turned it into a thriving concern.

He took a great interest in the Old Boys’ Association, and attended many of the association’s meetings. He was one of the editorial committee of the centenary school list, and was made an honorary life member of the Old Boys’ Association. Mr Solomon retired from teaching in 1960, and for several years he was in charge of the school text-book department at Whitcombe and Tombs, Ltd. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
