Record-Breaking Drivers
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Competing on the full 2.2-mile Pukekohe motor-racing circuit for the fl st time since November. drivers had a field day breaking track records at the Dunlop meeting on Sunday.
The record In the 0-5500 e.c. New Zealand saloon car championship class was bettered by three competitors and equalled by another in one race. The previous mark of imln 37.75ec, set on November 1 last year by I. W. Dawson, driving a Ford Mustang, was first lowered by l.Osec by R. Coppins (Chevrolet Camaro). and then further shattered when P. Fahey (Escot FVA) set a new time of tmin 35.45ec.
During the race. J. Richards (Escort Twin Cam) also beat the old time and J. Nazer. his Escort now fitted with an FVA motor, equalled it. Coppins won the race after Fahey, who was leading, dropped two places when the Escort’s brakes locked up at the elbow. Results:— National Touring Cars, 1001 C.C.-4200 c.c. (10 laps).—J.
