Georgians Dance At Airport
Whirling, leaping, dancing black-clad figures and wild music left visitors to Auckland airport on Sunday in no doubt that the Russian State Dance Company had arrived.
A score of fit, incredibly! athletic young men from the company put on an impromptu display of their dancing skills in front of the airport’s temporary terminal building. Cameras clicked and whir-
red and several hundred people thronged round the dancers as sabres clicked and flashed in the sun. A few minutes earlier several of the male dancers (there are about 15 female dancers) caused a stir when [they appeared from the cus- [ toms area with their lethalj looking weapons slung non- | chalantly over their shoulders. and articles of luggage [ hung over the blades. i A crowd of about 30 people, [mostly women, applauded the i dancers as they came from the customs area.
The Russians arrived from Australia after a highly successful week in Adelaide and three weeks in Sydney. The company previously visited New Zealand in 1963. The company gave its opening performance in Auckland last night, and the show will run there until April 11. It will be in Hamilton on April 13, 14 and 15, and then in Wellington for a week before it opens in Christchurch on April 23, 24 and 25.
