music 70”

First Concert On April 19 The first of the Christchurch Civic Orchestra’s “Music 70” concerts will be held in the Civic Theatre on Sunday afternoon, April 19. The guest conductor for the concert will be Dobbs Franks, who also conducted the successful “Music ’6B” series. Mr Franks will return to New Zealand from Australia, where he is now working, especially to conduct the concert. The programme of popular, light classical music will include extracts from Stravinsky’s “Petrouchka,” Mendelssohn’s sth Symphony and George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F Major, for which Mr Franks will be soloist

He will also speak briefly about the works before they are performed. Mr Franks has been working with the Elizabethan Theatre Trust in Australia and last month conducted the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in the Sydney Town Hall. He has also had several successful performances with the Australian Opera Company.

There will be four concerts in the “Music 70” series during the year, and all will be held in the Civic Theatre. Arrangements have yet to be completed for the conductors of the other three concerts by the orchestra.
