REDUCED HOURS

Clinic At Hornby

“This appears to be another case of a Government shirking its responsibility,” said Cr A. Y. Shuker, when the Health Department told the Paparua County Council last evening that hours at the Hornby industrial clinic would be reduced to one hour daily, between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m.

The department said that only 4 per cent of the nurse’s time was occupied at the clinic and that she would continue to attend to cases at factories and in patients* homes. “How can we be sure all accidents will happen between 10 and 11 o’clock?” asked Cr Shuker. The clinic should be open during working hours, because it was often hard to get medical service in an emergency, he said.

The council, he said, should tell the department that it should maintain adequate coverage at the clinic during working hours.

On the motion of Cr H. W. Bennett, the council decided to ask the department for more information. The clinic had done good work for some years, said Cr Bennett and its need was enhanced by industrial growth at Hornby and Sockburn.
