ITALIAN CRISIS

Poll Now Likely

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) ROME, March 20.

Italy today faced the prospects of a General Election three years ahead of schedule after the failure of the latest attempt to end the 41-day Government crisis. The caretaker Prime Minister (Mr Mariano Rumor) is due to se-' President Giuseppe Saragat during the day about the situation. A former Prime Minister, Mr Amintore Fanfani, a Christian Democrat, told President Saragat last night that his attempts to form a new four-party Centre-Left Coalition had failed.

His week-long attempt came nearer to success than two other Christian Democrat former Prime Ministers, Mr Rumor and Mr Aldo Moro, who have also tried to revive a coalition of Christian Democrats, Socialists, Social Democrats and Republicans.
